PERFORMANCE - WELLBEING - INJURIES

FAQ: FAQ

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM MY FIRST SESSION?

In your first session, we will discuss your history, including any previous injuries or issues that could be impacting on you now, and I will carry out a physical assessment. This enables me to provide you with a focused treatment that will have the greatest impact.

The remainder of the session will be a targeted massage to address whatever area/s require it. Sometimes one session is enough to alleviate discomfort and sometimes a series of treatments are required.

HOW DOES SOFT TISSUE MASSAGE DIFFER FROM NORMAL MASSAGE?

Soft tissue massage is applied with your goals in mind, meaning we look at what you need and then apply the relevant technique(s) to help you reach your goals. These techniques vary from: finding muscle imbalances which may be the cause of your current issue and offering exercises to correct them; questions about your sports equipment or mechanism of injury; treating the tissues which are crying out for attention. Your goals may vary depending on whether you are carrying an injury or just looking to prepare for your next training session.

SHOULD SPORTS/SOFT TISSUE MASSAGE HURT?

Some of the focused treatments can be strong but they shouldn't make you grit your teeth in discomfort!

When too much pressure is applied and causes undue pain, your natural response is to tense up, this means the therapist is now treating your voluntary muscle tension and not the problem area. This is definitely NOT what you want.

A good therapist should be sensitive to this and regulate their techniques to get the tissue to respond to the treatment. In some instances to get that tissue to respond it may be a little sensitive but it should not be unbearable.

I believe that my training has made me skilled at working with people and adapting my treatments according to their feedback. I see my soft tissue work as a two-way process and am always happy to moderate and tailor the treatment as we go.

IS THERE A GOVERNING BODY FOR WHAT YOU DO?

The Institute of Sports and Remedial Massage (ISRM) acts as a main governing body, and I am a Member of it.

The ISRM maintains the standards for sports massage practitioners and sports massage training organisations and regulates a National Register for sports massage practitioners.
